Quirky Life: August 31st, 2010

This past weekend wasn't the best for me. I was too sick to see my boyfriend at all and too sick to do anything of much use at home. I'm still not feeling well which has me worried that my cold has turned into a sinus infection. I'll probably be going to the doctor to get it checked out tomorrow or Thursday. There's not much else I can do at the moment except to keep resting and drinking lots of fluids (I've been drinking water, water, more water, and the occasional glass of juice). It really wouldn't be so bad if my sinuses being messed up didn't lead to me getting migraines. I can handle the slight sinus headache that happens but by the end of the day, everyday, I have a full blown migraine headache on top of it. I can't find a way to stop it from happening. I've tried everything I could think of. I've been trying to ignore them and sleep them off but I always wake up with my head hurting even worse than before. I don't like taking rescue meds so if I don't have anywhere to go that day I put it off for as long as possible.

Right now I'm just trying to look ahead to Saturday and Uproar Fest. Unfortunately I might not feel my best that day but I'm still determined to have the best time I can. I'm really excited.

Snail Mail is still making a trail!

It’s time to send the daughter off to college, which means it’s time to start sending letters and packages and postcards in the mail to her retro mailbox with little window and dial. She’s headed to a dormitory that was built in the late 1950’s, complete with a recessed boomerang ceiling and mosaic tiles of aqua, black and gray that trim the lobby of this blast from the past. It is the same dormitory that housed two of my aunts, her aunts, a few of the cousins of more recent years and now my own daughter along with her cousin, who will room just one flight of stairs above her.

The college is different from the one I attended, but the memories these girls will have while living in their dorm will be much like my own and all of the other women in our family who lived on this campus and called it home for a short but memorable time in their lives. The girls will gain friendships that will last a lifetime, and maybe, just maybe one day they will bring their own daughters back to this same campus to carry on the family tradition.

Since communication is so easy now with emails, Facebook, texting and even the old landline (my fave), it seems to me that the one form of communication that gets less attention these days is good ’ol fashion snail mail. Well, I’m determined not to let it be a thing of the past, so I hope to fill that little mailbox in the retro dorm with postcards every so often to give the girls a little something to hold onto, literally.

Here is the first card I sent to the girls. It speaks for itself, and it’s true of these cousins. They are both amazing girls with wonderful traits. I know I speak for the family, but I’m sure they all agree. We are proud of the girls and hope for the best in their next stage in life.

I have actually discovered that mail being sent to a college campus is truly s-n-a-i-l mail. What takes two or three days to go from coast to coast with the U.S. postal service, seams to change from snail mail to pony express when it hits a campus. I guess the name SnailMail is more fitting than I thought.

Remember, everyone likes to get something in the mail, even if it takes forever to arrive.

My Earliest Memory

Chief Engineer

I'm not certain what my very earliest memory was but I can list a few of the first things I can remember.

My cat Cisco sitting with me in the recliner while I sipped on a bottle full of apple juice, having bronchitis and having to put a mask over my face to get medicine, and recognizing LeVar Burton as 'the guy from Reading Rainbow' while my parents were watching Star Trek

How To Host The Perfect Poker Night

My boyfriend and I hosted a poker night at the end of July. I love to plan things but had never really done a gathering for this many people before. I was worried about making sure there was enough food and that everyone had a good time. Overall I think the night was a success.

Here is how to host your own poker night:

Step 1: Gather Poker Playing Supplies

Make sure you have the basic supplies for a poker game (cards, poker chips, a table to play on). My boyfriend already had cards and chips and his friend brought over a really nice table for them to play on.

Step 2: Invite People and Figure Out How Many Guests There Will Be

It's important to know how many people are coming so you can plan the amount of food and how many party favors you need to make/ buy.

Step 3: Make A Menu

Once you know how many people you need to feed you can start working on your menu. You'll need to decide if you're going to just have snacks or if you want to put out enough food for everyone to qualify as a dinner. I went the dinner route so that no one would have to worry about eating before or after. In either case you'll want to come up with dishes that are easy to eat and wont leave much of a mess on your fingers. You don't want to get food all over the cards during the game. Things that cane be serves on toothpicks are perfect.

Just for fun you can name all of your dishes after something that relates to poker like I did.

Here's my menu:

The Appetizers
  • Four of a Kind Fruit: A fruit tray with pineapple, apples, grapes, strawberries and a yogurt dip.
  • Las Vegas Veggies: A vegetable tray that included broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, olives, cucumber, bell peppers, celery, and french onion dip.
  • All In Olives: Just simple stuffed olives.
  • Poker Face Platter: A meat and cheese tray that had turkey, ham, cheddar cheese, colby-jack cheese, swiss cheese, vegetalbe crackers, wheat crackers, and slices of bread. We actually had two of these.
The Entrees:
  • Casino Royal Calzones: Small calzones made from crescent rolls, cheese and meat. Some had meat and some didn't.
  • Underdogs: These are just pigs in a blanket. They're made from hot dogs and crescent rolls.
  • Suit sandwiches: There were two kinds of sandwiches although I only got pictures of the ones on wheat. The ones on wheat bread had varying things including cheese, lettuce, hummus, and various lunch meats. There were also tiny peanut butter and jelly sandwiches served on white bread. I used cookie cutters to cut all of the sandwiches in to different shapes. All of the ones on wheat were circles but the ones on white were cut into things like dinosaurs and flowers.
Desserts:
  • Jackpot Pie:  A very simple and delicious pie made with Kool Aid. You can find the recipe here.
  • Poker Chip Cookies: I didn't get a picture of these either but they were simple chocolate chip cookies. After the guys had been playing for awhile I went and baked the cookies so they could have them warm right out of the oven.
Things That Weren't Included On The Menu:
  • Pickles
  • Potato Chips
  • Bowls Of Candy
  • Juice
  • Soda
  • Limeade
A Note: It's wise to ask people if they have any food sensitivities, allergies, or special diets. For instance at our poker night there was a vegetarian, someone who was lactose intolerance, me with all of my various migraine related food sensitivities, and also my friend Nick who refuses to eat vegetables (which sucks for him because Trevis and I almost always take him to a salad buffet place when we hang out lol). Keeping that in mind I made sure that I had food everyone could eat.

Step 4: Gather Other Supplies

Now that you know how many people are coming and what kind of food you'll be making you can get together other supplies like serving trays, plates, napkins, silverware, cups, and toothpicks.

Step 5: Decorate

I put up a few decorations just to make the atmosphere feel more poker-y. I found some giant playing cards to hang up in the room they were playing in and got a cute tape boarder to go around the table that held the food.

Step 6: Make/ Buy Party Favors

I really wanted to give everyone something they could take home so I bought some plain wooden boxes to put goodies for everyone in. I painted them black on the outside blue on the inside. Then I took some awesome paper I found and glued it on to the inside of the boxes. Finally I made a skull/ spade stencil that I used to paint the design on to the boxes. I filled each box with a pack of cards, a poker chip keychain, a bandanna with skulls on it, a tiny pirate flag, pixie stix, and pop rocks.

By the way I still have one of each kind of box. If anyone is interest in buying one leave a comment or email me :)

My friend Emily also came and was not playing so I made her her own little goodie bag of sorts. I found a cute purple tin and filled it with various candies and lip glosses and things.

Step 7: Have Something For Those Not Playing To Do

Of course if everyone you invite is playing you don't need to do this. I didn't want to play so I invited my friend Emily over to hang out. We played monopoly and watched movies one room over and had tons of fun.

That's it! I hope this was helpful :)

The Book That Left Me Disappointed

It's not that I didn't like the book, I did. I just felt like the first two thirds of the book were slow and then all the sudden in the last third of the book all of the action happened. It felt rushed. I understand that there was a need for a lot of set up to establish the kind of world Huxley had created, I just wish the action had been a bit more paced.

Get Vaccinated For Free At Dragon*Con!!

Hug Me! I'm Vaccinated

Did you know:
  1. We are currently in the midst of a terrible pertussis (also known as whooping cough) epidemic. In California, more than 2,700 cases have been reported so far this year — eight times last year’s number at this time. And is on pace to be the worst breakout since 1958!
  2. There is a very effective vaccination for whooping cough and most of us received it when we were kids. But the vaccine wears off after a few years.
  3. Adults and adolescents often get pertussis without realizing it.
  4. Pertussis can occur at any age; however infants and young children, particularly those who are not immunized, are at the highest risk for severe disease and potentially life-threatening complications.
  5. Pertussis is spread through the air by infectious droplets and is highly contagious.
  6. Dragon*Con in Atlanta brings over 40,000 people together from around the world into one (relatively small) space in downtown Atlanta. Most of these people have not received their booster shots for pertussis.
  7. Superwoman Skepchick Elyse Anders is launching an education campaign about vaccinations called “Hug Me! I’m Vaccinated” because she is comprised entirely of awesome.
Put all these things together and what do you get? An idea. As part of the Hug Me! I’m Vaccinated launch at Dragon*Con, the Skepchicks are organizing vaccine clinic during Dragon*Con. They will be providing FREE vaccines for any Dragon*Con participants who want them and will be distributing information and education about vaccinations during the event. Also, don’t miss the Skepchick panel on Friday night at Skeptrack!
They need your help so click here to find out how you can contribute and to get all the details!

I am going to get vaccinated myself very soon. CVS's Minute Clinic offers them so it's super easy to walk in and get it done. If you don't want to have to go through the hassle of going to your doctor and setting up an appointment this is a great alternative. It is called the TDAP Vaccine, just so you know what to ask for. Smile

It just make me smile. Not a birthday song or a birthday wish from my little gal, but a nice song from her. She has been crazy over Uncle Kracker's Smile song lately and I was surprised that she can remember most of the chorus part. So, on my birthday morning today, I requested a song from her.....

You make me smile like the sun
Fall out of bed, sing like bird
Dizzy in my head, spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night.

You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold, buzz like bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile.

(Lyrics from Uncle Kracker's Smile)

It just make me smile to hear her singing. Her songs are like sugar to my ears!! And when I commenting that she should sing more of those hit songs, she replied me with "Crazy mummy" and then went to sing her "Ten Little Indian" song. Lol!

Music Monday: Halestorm

In a couple of weeks my boyfriend and I are going to Uproar Fest and one of the bands that's going to be there is Halestorm. We bought their album and I've really been enjoying it so far. I have to say I'm really really excited to be getting to see a female fronted band.

I'm planning on do some nail art before the concert that includes their logo. It should be fun to do.

This is what it looks like:

And last but not least here's the video for one of my favorite songs by them, Familiar Taste of Poison. The video kind of reminds me of Lady Gaga's Paparazzi.

Happy Bunday! August 22nd, 2010

Every so often I get stubborn and wont take my B12 like I'm supposed to. Then my stomach starts trying to kill itself and I remember why I started taking it in the first place. There should be more interesting and productive posts coming this week, please excuse my lack of creativity at the moment.

Quirky Life: August 20th, 2010

My boyfriend and I went to Huntsville from the 15th to the 18th to visit my Grandma (hence the lack of posts, sorry!). We had a lot of fun. We were able to make one stop on the way there to see Paradise Gardens and one on the way back to do some shopping at Unclaimed Baggage. I have a bunch of pictures I need to go through and sort so I can post them.

I'll elaborate more when I get everything sorted out and I'm feeling a bit better. After a night of nightmares I woke up with a migraine this morning. It actually started last night, but I didn't want to take medicine for it. I was hoping a good night of sleep would get rid of it. No such luck :( I've taken medicine for it now but it's made me really loopy. Earlier to cheer me up my boyfriend took me to a cute cupcake place to cheer me up. I picked out a couple (mint chocolate and s'mores) to take home and eat. He's so sweet. I've only tried the mint chocolate cupcake so far. It was really yummy.

Same old thing

Lately I have not done much posting in my blogs but I still have times to visit some friends' blogs, checking on what they have been doing and so.....It is the same for me; every day doing the same routine; busy with kids and shop. So nothing interested to post about.

My day always started off from 7am (if my baby does not wake me up earlier than that). Then started my journey on the road around 8am; sending kids off to school and baby sitter and then usually gone to the bank to deposit my sales and have breakfast. Now that I have my Indonesian worker with me, it would be me and her having breakfast and hubby usually can take his nap longer at home. Otherwise I would drag him out of the bed to accompany me for breakfast.

So the day goes on with me at the shop; and sometimes if not many customers I would take some hours off in the afternoon go home and do some chores. If weather permitted I would go for a swim with hubby. In the evening, hubby and myself would take turn to do the closing and look after the kids.

So this is my current life style........boring huh?? Anyway, Happy Weekend everyone!

Another week another ranting

Read the online newspaper this morning; and according to Meteorology Department, it is going to be a wet week ahead. So the prediction is quite correct as this morning it has been raining non stop. What a cold and lazy Monday to start with over here.

Irregardless of what the weather would be, I still need to open the shop and business is as usual. Everything is running smoothly in my shop. Both staff is able to operate on their own, so I can take some times off on weekday and Sunday to take care of my household chore and kids. Talking about kids, both kids are still recovering from running noses. Baby Jay is 1 year old yesterday, according to Chinese lunar calendar. His Chinese birthday falls on 6th of the 7th month, while mine is on 10th, which is few days apart. His English birthday is on 25th this month. Maybe a dinner to celebrate his 1 year old then.

As for my girl, hubby and myself have thought of enrolling little gal to music classes. Last night I asked my girl to choose between swimming and music; and she chosen music. She asked whether she can have dancing, but I told her that we prefer her to play musical instrument instead. There is a music centre near my shop, so I am thinking of putting her in piano class there. About RM50 for a once a week class per month. Maybe one day I will bring little gal to the centre and see how she thinks about it. *wink*

Back in the shop

Came back yesterday afternoon and nothing but heavy rain greeted me. However I am happy to be back as no place is better than home.

As for my KL trip, it was fun and tiring at the same time. I went to KL with a friend and met up with two other friends over there on Sunday afternoon. We spent our afternoon in KLCC. In the evening we have our dinner around 9something in Jalan Alor. The next day we have our seminar till 6pm. Again we window shopping in Times Square. Everywhere is sales as it is Mega Sales month now. However I did not buy much. Just 2 jackets for Baby Jay, and a pair of sandal and a top for myself. Lol!

Here I am, in my shop again. It was a busy morning today as I have my stocks coming in. Within a week, I have 3 stocks-in, so now my shop looks cramped and everywhere is boxes of goods. Cannot squeeze into the store room as it was full too. Hmm, wonder how to arrange all those boxes....Headache!

How I Feel About Swear Words, Goshdarnit

Smiley face written in the sky during the inauguration of Governor Bob Martinez

I don't mind them but I think it's more fun to make up your own "swear words" especially when they sound super silly. It helps relieve tension like normal swear words would but it makes you giggle too :)

If I Could Be a Character From a Book, I'd Be...

I'd be Alice because I've always related to her more than any other character. Having chronic migraines with aura makes me feel like I'm stuck in Wonderland all the time because it really messes with my sense of perception.

Happy Bunday! August 8th, 2010

This coming week is going to be full of doctor's appointments and road trips for me. Busy, busy, busy.
