Halloween Romance

Halloween Romance by QuirkyLove featuring maryjane shoes

Halloween has always been my absolute favorite holiday. Being able and expected to run around dressed like a goblin (and given candy for it to boot) was really exciting for me as a little kid. It's a day when you can act like a freak and no one will bat an eyelash. While it might not be the most traditionally romantic holiday I think it can be one of the most romantic times of the year.

Here are some ways you can make Halloween a day to remember for your special someone.

  • Have a movie marathon! You can take this that traditional route and have a scary movie marathon so you can snuggle during the particularly scary bits. If that's too cliche for you, you may want to go the nostalgia route. Watch movies that remind you of your childhood (Casper, It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, or one of my favorites that I watch almost every year Hocus Pocus). Another idea for a movie marathon if you and/ or your partner are fans of Tim Burton (like me!) you can just watch his movies. Danny Elfman's music alone can make everything feel a bit more magical.
  • Dress up together. There are so many different ideas for couples costumes; from the traditional to the more offbeat. Just have fun and be creative.
  • Visit a pumpkin patch. Looking for that perfect pumpkin together can be a fun way to spend an afternoon. You can find locations on this site.
  • Take a hayride. A lot of the pumpkin patches around where I live offer hayrides.
  • Carve pumpkins together. You can make your own design or print a stencil (there are tons of free ones up online). If you don't want to deal with the mess of gutting a pumpkin you can paint (acrylic, spray paint, glow in the dark, etc.), glue things on to (using different candies to make designs or faces is super cute), or decorate your pumpkins with stickers instead.
  • Roast pumpkin seeds. Save the seeds from the pumpkins you carve so you can make your partner a yummy treat.
  • Go to a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The audience participation will make it a night to remember. You can find theaters that are showing it on this site.
  • Visit a haunted house. You can find a lot of very cool and inventive haunted houses nowadays. For those who really enjoy special effects and performance art just seeing the effort put into the effects makes a trip worth it. You can find locations on this site.
  • Go to a Halloween parade. If you have a Halloween parade near where you live go and enjoy the festivities together. A lot of the parades are held on days that aren't Halloween so you'll get an extra chance to dress up.
  • Make a treat bag. By a cute container (you can get those cute plastic jack-o-lantern buckets for really cheap) and fill it with your partner's favorite candies. You can throw in some other Halloween-y treats as well (or maybe even a trick or two).
  • Watch the leaves change colors. Take time during October to admire the beautiful colors of the autumn leaves. You can also crunch leaves under your feet and jump in piles of them together.
  • Take a walk in the moonlight. Now that the weather is changing and there's a chill in the air nighttime walks become a little cuddlier. If you really want to admire the moon together it will be full on October 23rd.
  • Plan a spooky dinner, either as a surprise or together. Have fun coming up with silly names and dine in together.
  • Dine by candle light while you enjoy your spooky meal.
  • Surprise your special someone with black roses. If roses aren't your thing you can always get orange flowers, like tiger lilies and orange sunflowers, instead.
  • Attend a Halloween ball. You'd be surprised by how many places throw balls and masquerades during the Halloween season. To make things more interesting you can arrive separately and try to find each other in the crowd. The difficulty of finding each other will depend on your costume and whether or not you're wearing a mask.
  • Drink some hot apple cider. Between cuddles and hot apple cider you're sure to stay toasty this fall.
  • Volunteer together. Whether it's setting up a haunted house, volunteering at a children's hospital, or collecting money for UNICEF doing something productive and making a difference together can bring you closer.
  • Get lost in a corn maze. Trying to find your way out of a larger than life maze can be really fun, especially if you sneak around corners for kisses  Some mazes are even open for nighttime wanderings. You can find a maze near you on this site.
  • Go to a murder mystery dinner. If you want dinner and a show a murder mystery dinner is perfect. The interactive format of the entertainment makes it more interesting than the standard dinner and a movie.
  • Browse costume and Halloween shops together. Looking through the props and trying on silly hats is goofy, fun, and free.
  • Decorate! To really get in the Halloween mood make your abode feel a bit more spooky. For a more personal touch you can hand make the decorations together.
  • Pass out candy. Manning the door together and handing out candy can be more entertaining than you'd think. Getting to see everyone's costumes can spark some silly conversations.
  • Bake a pumpkin pie. Something about crisp fall air makes people start to crave pumpkin dishes. There are so many different things you can make to surprise your special someone with but I think a traditional pumpkin pie is one of the bests.
